Abstract

The opening (stoma) is created between the bowel and abdominal skin, to transfer the intestinal contents outward. Stoma patients face multiple psychosocial issues include anxiety, depression…etc.). Therefore, it is a critical issue that nurses are prepared for patients and the families who may have misconceptions of stoma formation and its treatment with sufficient awareness and practice. So, this research was intended to improve the professional nurse’s colostomy care expertise and practices. This study aimed to assess the effect of an educational program on nurse’s performance about colostomy care. To fulfill the aim of this study the following research hypothesis was formulated there will be a significant difference between the pre and after educational program of knowledge & practice level regarding colostomy care among study sample nurses • Quasi-experimental research design was utilized in the current study. The sample included (40) nurses at Oncology Center & Minia university hospital. The data collected by using two tools: The First Tool: ”Structured Questionnaire Sheet” it consists of (two parts): Part I: Socio demographic data sheet for nurses including (age- gender- working department…..etc. Part II: Structured knowledge questionnaire to assess nurses knowledge about colostomy care such as (meaning of colostomy, normal appearance of the stoma, etc.). Second Tool: “Colostomy Care Observational Checklist Sheet about Colostomy Care” for assessment nurses’ practice about colostomy care. The finding of the current study revealed that the mean average age of the studied group was (32.95 ± 3.65) years and more than two-thirds of the total studied group were females. As regards educational level; the present study findings demonstrated that more than half of the studied group had a diploma in nursing. On the other hand, more than half of the studied group had more than 10 years of experience.
Results showed that: There is a statistically significant difference between the pre and after educational program of knowledge level regarding colostomy care among nurses. Total knowledge score in Pretest Mean ± SD (7.00 ± 2.65) where after 3 months Mean ± SD (17.02 ± 1.92), p-value(0.000**). Also, there is a statistically significant difference between the pre and after educational program of practice level regarding colostomy care among nurses. Total practice score in the pretest, Mean ± SD (26.8 ±11.5), where after 3 months Mean ± SD (107.7 ± 8.09) with p-value (0.000**).There was a positive correlation between nurses’ total knowledge scores &total practice scores regarding colostomy care in the immediate after were p-value(0.021*) and after 3 months with p-value (0.047*) of implementing colostomy care educational program (n=40). The study concluded that there was a positive effect of the educational program in improving nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding colostomy care. Recommendations: Greater attention and close observation from the hospital’s supervisors on nurses′ performance during care for a patient with colostomy and replication of the study should be done on a large sample.
