Abstract

Egypt today faces environmental and energy challenges due to the increase of urbanization and population that causes an increase in energy demand specially in residential sector due to most of buildings suffered from poor indoor air quality and thermal performance it cusses increasing of air conditioning units to achieve better thermal comfort it consumes about 56% of total energy per annum. Therefore the main problem can summarize to two aspects  The increase in energy consumption compared to the energy supplies in Egypt  The heat loss through building envelope in existing buildings led to increasing energy consumption in the process of achieving thermal comfort inside the building. So this study aims to retrofit a residential building to find how the interventions in building envelope can contribute in improving the energy performance of a building. In addition to provide a suggestion a feasible methodology for retrofitting building envelope in Egyptian residential building to achieve high energy efficiency building with local, construction materials that can reducing energy consumption and maintains thermal comfort to be a baseline reference specifically devised for local energy efficiency that enabling to speed up the reduction in energy use and carbon emission in line with the 2030 goals.
The research starts with the theoretical part. This part is basically concerned with two issues, the current status of the Egyptian context, principles of energy efficiency residential building and retrofitting strategies for this type of building.  ”As per the current situation in Egypt, it focuses on both the existing building stock as well as the energy situation because those two aspects articulate the research problem”.  ”The second main component of the literature review retrofitting the energy efficient buildings, mainly defining the concept and discussing its strategies.” Followed by the practical part where the research targets implementing the proposed guidelines on the pragmatic level. and Applied study includes the third Part of The Research .it is basically it is basically consist of three parts:  Part one (The Analytical part) Analyzing and processing the collected data for selecting case study (current situation) according to energy consumption, thermal comfort and cost analysis.  Part two: studying the effect of retrofitting building envelop element on to energy consumption, thermal comfort and cost.  Part three (The Deductive part ) Create different alternatives by integrating building envelop elements materials in pervious part to identify possible retrofit measures and Evaluate this alternatives .The key outcome of the research is a methodology of retrofitting existing residential buildings to be high energy
