Abstract

Trauma is the leading cause of death and disability in childhood. It accounts for approximately 50% of all deaths in children, and almost 1 in every 6 requires treatment in the emergency department each year for injuries. In Egypt, injuries are a significant source of mortality and morbidity; they are the fifth leading cause of death. In one rural health unit in Egypt, injuries constituted 23.1%of all visits mostly of children. Because periods of pediatric ages are characterized by different stages of physical, cognitive and social development, this may obviously explain the varying patterns of injuries across age group.
The primary causes of traumatic death are central nervous system injuries and substantial blood loss. Trauma has typically been categorized into two broad types: blunt and penetrating. In penetrating trauma, injury is focused on the areas directly affected by the penetrating object. In large centers, the mechanisms of blunt trauma are the most observed, accounting for more than 80% of trauma patients, and can be subdivided accordingly to mechanisms of injury, into motor vehicle crash, falls, pedestrian struck by motor vehicles, bicycle crashes, motor cycle crashes, and various other mechanism and it is recognized that the complications of accidents in pediatrics are much worse than those of their relatives from the adults due to their fragile bodies
