Abstract Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune/antigen-mediated esophageal disease characterized clinically by symptoms related to esophageal dysfunction and histologically by eosinophil-predominant inflammation. EoE was unknown until early nineteenth where scientists noticed eosinophils in the esophagus and identified EoE as a distinct disease. Its prevalence in the United states and Europe is around 1- 6 per 10,000 persons. The mean age at diagnosis is 30–50 years among adults, while it is 5.4–9.6 years in children. EoE can affect any race and gender, however, it is prevalent among Caucasian males with predominance in the developed world. Male to female ratio is 3 to 1, and other studies in different population denoted a 19 to 1 ratio. Aim of our work is to identify the prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in adult patients presenting with upper gastrointestinal symptoms in Suez Canal University Hospital. Upper GIT endoscopy was done for all participants with at least 3 biopsies taken from 2 different sites in the esophagus including the distal and either mid or proximal esophagus even if the esophagus appeared endoscopically normal. |
