Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious disease and is associated with a variety of secondary complications. Foot ulcers are common in patients with DM. PAD could be present in more than 50% of patients with diabetic foot ulceration. PAD is a major burden to ulcer healing and increases the chance of limb amputation. The Aim of this study: The aim of the current study is to evaluate the prevalence of vascular insult in diabetic foot patients and the efficacy of revascularization (either PTA or surgical) on outcome as limb salvage. Materials and Methods: This study was accompanied on a sample of three hundred and ninety two cases of diabetic foot ulcer patients (with or without infection). These were the patients admitted to Vascular Surgery Department in Mansoura University Hospitals. All patients had undergone careful history taking, thorough clinical examination and proper investigations. • Results: In 392 patients, PAD was detected in 172 cases (43.87%), while the remaining cases had no PAD (220 cases). Amputation was performed in 89 cases (51.7%) in the PAD +ve group, while it was only performed in only 39 cases (17.7%) in the PAD -ve cases. Conclusion: Based on our findings, it appears that PAD has a significant impact on diabetic foot patients. Not only does it constitute a great number among diabetic foot ulcer patients but it is also a huge threat to limb salvage and a major risk for amputation.
