Abstract Neoproterozoic rocks ofMeatiq area were deformed and metamorphosed during the Pan-African orogeny (650-550 Ma; Kennedy 1964). The rocks of Meatiq area are arranged in structural orders. They were classified on the basis of tectono- stratigraphy into two main categories; Meatiq and Atalla Successions. Meatiq Succession is subdivided into three FOlmations; Um Esh EI-Hamra, Abu Zohleiqa and Abu Fannani. These rock units are composed mainly of psammitic and pelitic schists. .~ Atalla Succession IS composed mainly of ophiolitic-island arc assemblage structurally intercalated with the deformed dismembered Hammamat sediments. The tectonic pile of the rocks has been intruded by four granitic plutons, which were emplaced at various stages in the tectonic history. A series of large-scale thrust duplexes with major folds and shear-zones are structurally dominated the area. A complex polyphase structural history has been deduced consisting of earlier ductile and late more brittle defolmation phases. The structural investigation of the area reveals five deformation phases affecting the rocks of the area. The DJ structures are folds, thrust faults and shear zones directed NW- SE. The D2 structures include the Atalla shear zone and NW-SE oriented folds. The D3 structures including NNW-SSE thrust faults. The D4 is represented by the N-S, NW-SE and NE-SW strike-slip faults. Finally, the D5 is represented by NE-SW normal faults due to post orogenic extension. Meatiq area is affected by brittle- ductile shear zones; Meatiq and Atalla shear zones. Both of them display left-lateral sense of shear. The vorticity analysis demonstrated that MSZ is sub-simple shear; while Atalla shear zone is pure and simple shear. Based on the high resolution satellite images, field and petrographic studies the previously described ”Meatiq gneiss dome and Um Baanib granite gneiss are now oblate Meatiq diapiric dome and Urn Baanib deformed granite respectively. Oblate Meatiq diapiric dome is composed of two sub-domes; Um Baanib and Urn Esh El Hamra. The two sub-domes are separated by Abu Zohleiqa synform. |
