Abstract

Obesity is a condition of abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in adipose tissue, to the extent that health may be impaired.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Garcinia cambogia fruits on the body weight, feed intake, lipid profile, glucose, peritoneal fat pad, leptin hormone and kidney and liver functions of obese rats. Evaluation of Garcinia cambogia extract at different level (5, 10 and 15%) and also evaluation of Garcinia cambogia powder at levels (5 and 10%). Forty-two adult male albino rats (Sprague- Dawley strain)were divided into two main groups, the first main group (n=6 rats ) was fed on basal diet and served as the control negative group, while the second main group (n=36 rats) was fed on high fat diet for four weeks to induce obesity then was divided into six subgroups , subgroup (1) was fed on basal diet and served as the control positive group, subgroups (2, 3, 4) were feed on basal diet containing (5%, 10% and 15% ) Garcinia cambogia water extract, subgroups 5 and 6 were feed on basal diet containing 5%, 10% Garcinia Cambogia powder.
The obtained results could be summarized as follows:-
1- Chemical composition of Garcinia cambogia fruits :
Garcinia cambogia is characterized with low protein content (0.25%). High amount of total carbohydrates (66.07%), fat (20.5%), crude fiber (10.2%) and ash content (2.97%) were noticed on dry weight basis. Moisture content recorded 10.60%. Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) extracted from Garcinia cambogia was 4%. Minerals content were K, ca, Na, Mn, Mg, Cu, Fe, p and K had the highest amount compared with other elements.
2- The effect of experimental diets on body weight and peritoneal fat ratio of rat:
The most effective level of Garcinia cambogia water extract 15% and GC powder was 10% which resulted in weight loss by about 20%. Meanwhile level of GC 5% and 10% water extract and 5% GC powder induced, faced a low decrease in the final body weight compared with basal diet control (BDC). No significant difference between level of GC water extract 15% and GC 10%.It was noticed that addition of 15% GC water extract and 10% GC powder to rate diets was enough to reduce body weight compared with BDC control.
