Abstract

Otitis media (OM) is a leading cause of health care visits worldwide. It is characterized by the accumulation of infected fluid in the middle ear, bulging of the eardrum, pain in the ear and, if eardrum is perforated, drainage pus into the ear canal. The most important causes of OM are bacterial and viral infections, where infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) will likely remain common and serious. Not only there has been an increase in antimicrobial resistance, but also the spectrum of clinical disease continues to increase. Pathogenicity of P aeruginosa and S. aureus are clearly multifactorial as they have different virulence factors..
