Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze risk factor of postoperative spinal infection and to describe a suitable management protocol for those patients. Risk factors are identified as prevention of such cases is better on the outcome of the patient and the cost of management on the medical system. Preoperative risk factors like smoking, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension, Intra-operative risk factors are mainly Dural tears with CSF leak and Postoperative risk factors are like prolonged hospital stay and neglected wound dressing. The Diagnosis is mainly confirmed by MRI with contrast enhancement and CT scans with instrumentations implanted patients. The organism should be isolated for antibiotic choice. CRP level is monitored for follow up of treatment effectiveness. Cephalosporins are usually used as empiric therapy and were continued when showing successfulness in controlling the inflammation process especially when organisms could not be isolated. Conservative therapy was undertaken in 20 cases. It consists of antibiotic therapy based on wound swabs and frequent dressing with wound infections. While in cases of discitis it consists of bed rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, and IV antibiotics. Surgical intervention was performed in 30 cases. It consists of wound debridement, Dural repair, disc debridement, and instrumentation. |
