Abstract

learning is an essential process that allow nursing staff improvement in their positions, modifies their thinking and action, and furnishes them with professional information they need to achieve health care organization goals. It is viewed as a principal strategic instrument for improving healthcare delivery, knowledge and skills to keep current with changes in practice. Since healthcare is rapidly advancing in coordination with the fast pace of technology growth, healthcare organizations need to provide nursing staff with access to continuous learning. The present research aimed to assess learning environment and nurses practice competency at Tanta Main University Hospital. The study was conducted at Tanta Main University. The study subjects included (n=200) nursing staff who are working at Tanta Main University Hospital. Data of the study were collected by using two tools; tool I: nursing learning environment questionnaire used to collect the data about learning organization environment characteristics and it was consisted of (39) items and divided into seven dimensions. Tool II: nurses practice competency questionnaire was consisted of (32) items and categorized under five domains. Results of present study revealed that: • The age of nurses ranged between 21 to 44 years old with mean age (29.23+4.5), • Their years of experience ranged between 1 to 26 with mean years of experience (8.07+4.21). More than thirty (34.5%) working in medical department, and (5.0%) of them working in urology. • More than forty (44.0%) of nurses were graduated from Technical institute. while all of them were female. • More than half (69.0%) of nurses had moderate level of learning environment, while (31.0%) of them had highly level of total scores. The highest mean scores (71.58+10.59) was to establish system to capture and share learning, while the lowest scores (56.98+10.22) was create continuous learning opportunities. • More than three quarter (80.0%) of nurses had high level of total practice competency scores. While other (19.5 %) had moderate level of total scores. • There is no correlation between all dimension of learning environment and experience in years (p<0.05). • There is a positive correlation between experience in years and knowledge-based practice domain (p<0.05). • All (100.0%) of nurses had moderate learning environment score at urology department, followed by (76.3%) at medical ICU, 69.8% at incubator, 66.7% at medical word and 57.5 at obstetric units. • There is no statistical correlation between learning environment and nurse practice competency. (p<0.05) Based on the results of this study, it was recommended that health organizations provide flexible schedule, days off and rewards to nursing staff for participation in continuous learning program to improve nursing practice competency.
