Abstract

There are an estimated 200 million children in the world who have a disability, and the bulk of these children live in low and middle income countries. Living in these countries places children at risk for disability due to poverty related health factors, such as anemia and malnutrition. World health organization has launched Gap action program on mental health which aims for detection and early intervention to worldwide infant disabilities. The program listed many tests for developmental screening for both high income countries and low income countries.
Developmental screening is the process of identifying children who may have a developmental problem or a delay in one or more domains of development, or who are at risk of developmental problems in the future. Comprehensive developmental screening should include consideration of the child‟s physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development and risk factors in the child‟s background.
Screening provides a quick snapshot of a child‟s health and developmental status and indicates whether further evaluation is needed to identify potential difficulties that might necessitate interventions or special education services.
Among fourteen tools listed for low income countries we selected Baroda screening tool to apply in Menouf city Menoufia Governerate. The Baroda Development Screening Test was developed by Phatak and Khuranato assess motor and mental development of infants in Baroda, India. The tool can be used for children aged 0 to 30 month(s). It is based on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and is composed of 54 items (22 focus on motor and 32 on mental development). selected items were those found to be simple to administer not requiring special training, experience, and equipment. The Baroda Development Screening Test is described as a simple and quick tool that can be applied by health workers in a door-to-door survey. Its specificity was 65% and sensitivity 95% when tested in Pune, India, comparing the assessment by health workers with that by fully-trained testers.
The aim of our work was Establishment of a chart which represents normal variation of different milestones for Menouf city City infants’ (0-30) months, which help for early detection of developmental delay.
The focus on this group of age has two main reasons
Children below the age of 3 years have more frequent contacts with health facilities, an important opportunity for identification. Children at such young age are more responsive to intervention
Our study is a Cross sectional study of 800 normal infants in Menouf city Menoufia Governorate (The city and the rural area surround) up to the age of 30 months. The ages grouped month-wise for the first 12 months ,three monthly for the next three months and six monthly for the next 12 months ;the sample of each age group 50 infants.
The age of the infant is calculated by submit the birth date from the current date and dividing the days over 30 to give the age by months, each age group included all the infants up to 30 day (example: infant his age 5months and one day included in 6 month age group).
