Abstract

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disease caused by abnormal proliferation of retinal vessels in infants with low birth weight and preterm birth. Despite the significant improvement in the conditions of neonatal intensive care and the advancements in screening and treatment, ROP still emerges as a cause of the main ophthalmologic problem in the later lives of premature infants. Advanced stage ROP may be associated with vision loss ranging from severe vision impairment to full blindness. In the current study we aimed to evaluate the predictive value of platelet mass index and other hematological parameters in ROP. Thirty preterm neonates with retinopathy of prematurity were included as the patient group. Another 30 healthy preterm neonates of matched age, weight and sex served as a control group. All included neonates were subjected to full history taking, complete clinical examination, and ophthalmological examination using indirect ophthalmoscope. Laboratory investigation were performed in the form of RBC count, HB level, HCT, PLT count, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, MPV, PDW,and PMI.
