Abstract Aphasia is an acquired impairment of language processing which may affect speech comprehension, expression, writing or reading.Aphasia in adults is mostly due to stroke in the language area of the dominant cerebral hemisphere and it occurs in 20% to 40% of acute stroke patients. It is one of the most challenging consequences of stroke and rTMS may emerge as a promising alternative to improve communication skills in patients that until now only speech therapy has showed to be effective to maximize the natural recovery after stroke. The study was carried out in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Center of Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Tanta University Hospitals. The duration of this study was six months, starting from April 2018.The aim of this work was to assess the possible efficiency of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in treating expressive aphasia in patients with ischemic stroke. Our study was a randomized controlled study in which 40 patients with first ischemic stroke fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria who presented with expressive dysphasia were selected. The selected 40 patients were randomly assigned to 20 patients received real stimulation (active group) and 20 patients received sham stimulation (sham group). The two groups received speech therapy. |
