Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the world’s most prevalent and fatal diseases. Type 2 diabetics represent 90% of all cases of diabetes and the estimated prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Egypt is 17.3% in 2017. Egypt’s rank in the prevalence of diabetes (20-79 years) had been shifted from the 9th in 2015 to be the 8th among the top 10 countries with diabetes.
The outcomes of studies investigated vitamin C as a potential adjunct therapy in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus were conflicting. Therefore, we intended to determine whether vitamin C supplementation for a short-term period could improve the levels of HbA1c in type 2 diabetics.
This study aimed at promoting the quality of care provided to type 2 diabetic patients. The study objectives were to assess the effect of adding vitamin C to the usual oral non-insulin pharmacologic agents on HbA1c and body mass index of type 2 diabetic patients.
The study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial at the Family Medicine out-patient clinic affiliated to Suez Canal University hospital. 60 uncontrolled type2 diabetic patients on oral non-insulin pharmacologic agents and allocated into two groups in a 1:1 allocation ratio;
A) Intervention group included 30 subjects that had been received their routine oral non-insulin pharmacologic agents plus a daily supplementation with 1gram vitamin C capsules for 12 weeks.
B) Control group included 30 subjects that only had received their routine oral non-insulin pharmacologic agents plus placebo in form of 1gram Inulin capsules daily.
Tools of the study were interview questionnaire, examinations and laboratory investigations to assess:
• Personal history, medical history and drug history.
