Abstract The purpose of the present study was to assess the dento-skeletal effects of memory palatal split screw (MPSS) appliance in the management of the transverse maxillary constriction using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study was carried out on 10 patients with a mean age of 13.5±1.1 years who had transverse maxillary constriction manifested by a posterior crossbite. MPSS appliance was utilized to expand the upper jaw in all sample. The expansion screw was activated 2 quarter turns three times a day till the overcorrection had occurred. For all patients CBCT were taken before and immediately after expansion to evaluate the dentoskeletal effects. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 15 package. Paired t-test and its significance were used to calculate the differences between pre and post-expansion values for each parameter. The results of this study revealed that the skeletal changes in the anteroposterior, vertical, and transverse planes were significant (p<0.05) except for the SNAº which was insignificant (p>0.05). The upper interpremolar and inter-molar widths at the coronal and apical levels were significantly increased (p<0.05). The buccal tipping angles of the anchored teeth (the external angle) were decreased significantly (p<0.05). On the other hand, the buccolingual inclination of the upper canines was insignificantly changed (p>.05). In addition, the vertical positions of the upper first molars were insignificantly changed (p>.05). |
