Abstract The number of people with DM increased from 108 million to 422 million over the period from 1980 to 2014. CAN is one of the major chronic complications of DM II which devastates the autonomic nerve fibers leading to abnormalities in autonomic control of vascular dynamics and heart rate. Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is one of the neurotrophin family. It presents in many tissues as the mammalian brain, muscles, liver and adipose tissue. BDNF has an important role in neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity and heart rate regulation. Clinical investigations have revealed that impairment of glucose metabolism found in DM II is frequently associated with lower levels of BDNF. Acute and Intense physical exercise increase BDNF production in some species including humans. Aerobic exercise workout inhibits the progression of CAN in type 1 DM. subsequently, researchers recommend for more investigations to explore the mechanisms that lead to diabetic improvement by exercise. This work aimed at assessing the role of BDNF and swimming exercise in improving CAN caused by DM II in rats and testing the possible underlying mechanism by which swimming exercise can improve CAN in rats.
