Abstract

Corrosion is one of the most dangerous problems that face the petroleum industry, as it‘s responsible for significant shutdowns and maintenance costs. Shutdowns are costly in terms of productivity losses, restart energy, and material costs. Additionally, internal corrosion failures result in the contamination of products and process streams, while external corrosion leaks create undesirable safety and environmental hazards. There are numbers of methods for protection from the danger of corrosion, but this treatise concentrates on the electrical view of the corrosion and how to treat with it using cathodic protection method, which is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electromechanical cell. The main issue of this treatise is cathodic protection of on-shore petroleum applications especially pipelines and tanks. Our destination at the end of this treatise is developing a software program using MATLAB to be used in the design of a cathodic protection system for pipelines and tanks.Chapter (1) in this chapter we will talk about the theory of electrochemical corrosion and economics of corrosion, and how it increases the expenses drastically.Chapter (2) talks about methods of corrosion control.Chapter (3) talks about cathodic protection concepts, applications which require cathodic protection and requirements for cathodic protection system. At the end of this chapter, we will make a comparison between the two types of cathodic protection systems.Chapter (4) discusses sacrificial anode cathodic protection system in details, including anodes types and characteristics.Chapter (5) discusses impressed current cathodic protection system in details, including anodes types and system requirements.Chapter (6) Methodology of the design principle by discussing the general design procedures and how to choose the appropriate system type to be designed.Chapter (7) illustrates steps and equations which are required to design a complete cathodic protection system for pipelines. At the end of this chapter there is case study, which were designed using the software which was developed using MATLAB.Chapter (8) talks about the conclusion of this treatise and the future work of the research in this field.
