Abstract

Shading system plays a significant role in the building envelope design. In addition, the shading system geometry controls both appearance and thermal performance of the building. On the other hand, christopher alexander -theorist and architect- developed a theory about the impact of certain geometrical properties on the human being psychological needs. Alexander found that these properties have a great impact in removing anxiety and creating a comfortable feeling to the building occupants. Therefore, this thesis investigates the effect of using the alexandrine properties in shading system design on indoor thermal comfort. the investigation is done through the following steps: first, through studying relationship between alexandrine geometric properties and building sustainability second, by designing a fractal shading system that follows the alexandrine properties and simulating its effect on indoor thermal comfort. The simulation is done by using grasshopper plugin for modelling, ladybug and honeybee for energy simulation. The investigation found a positive relation between the alexandrine properties usage and building sustainability. The simulation results found that the fractal shading system helps in achieving indoor thermal comfort more than the standard shading system design.
