Abstract

The research aims to measure the validity of Virtual Reality (VR) to promote psychological and social considerations in designing educational spaces for the disabled. It concluded that the Head Mounted Display (HDM) system is an appropriate tool through which these psychological aspect are evaluated. The research discusses the psychological, social and mobility needs of the disabled within educational spaces in order to reach appropriate design criteria that meet these needs. These design criteria were collected in a checklist so that they can be used in the process of evaluating the case study. The educational spaces for the case study were also evaluated using one of the types of virtual display glasses (HTC Vive), through which users can walk through virtually within the spaces and evaluate them according to the visual impressions of the disabled inside the educational space. The study was applied to one of England’s schools as a case study.
The researcher followed two paths to prove the research hypothesis:
1. Immersion of the disabled in a virtual model to obtain their responses to the different educational spaces.
2. Evaluation of some experts in the field of (Architectural Design-Interior Design) to evaluate educational spaces.
By comparing the results of the two paths, the results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between them, which proves the research hypothesis that virtual reality has the ability to promoting the psychological considerations within educational spaces. The scientific addition of the thesis is the design criteria that take into account the psychological, social and mobility needs of the disabled, how to use the virtual reality technology with a Head Mounted Display (HDM) system in evaluating educational spaces according to psychological aspect, as well as the possibility of using this technology in the process of architectural design and participation of users in the design processes to know their requirements before implementing architectural projects.
