المستخلص

In parallel with the high awareness of environmental problems,
many architectural trends have emerged that adopting or supporting the
idea of the importance of environmental balance, especially the urban
sectors that are considered as one of the main consumers of natural
resources, hence the idea of new concepts and methods was not unusually
known in design and implementation of projects before, and some of
those concepts are ”sustainable architecture”, ”sustainable design”,
”sustainable buildings”.
The sustainability of housing is considered as part of the global
sustainability that concerns a lot of scientists and researchers in all fields,
especially those who are involved in issues of environmental preservation
and its balance that can’t be achieved unless through the sustainability of
all forms of development, especially residential development, that
provides the human choice of adequate and comfortable house, which
represents a big proportion of Development.
The assessment of sustainability is considered as a main condition
to promote the sustainable development, also, the possibility of assessing
the sustainability of products and processes has a particular importance in
the urban environment, and that’s according to numerous studies. The
assessment of sustainability in the urban environment is inevitable to help
in increasing the spread of cities and sustainable buildings, so that, many
sustainable systems have emerged, However, these systems have been
accused of incompleteness since they may neglect one of the three
dimensions of sustainable development (environmental, economical,
socio- cultural), as it is not possible to prepare or implement any
sustainable strategy or policy without merging these dimensions together.
Considering that most global sustainability assessment systems
were developed to suit each region’s conditions and its environmental,
economic and social characteristics, therefore these systems with its differ
may not be appropriate for the local conditions of Egypt, as Egypt is
characterized by a very hot climate, and with the increasing use of
buildings with different patterns of materials, energy and water, In
addition to the increasing population growth, the housing problem is
constantly increasing, therefore this has led to increase efforts to create
new cities to accommodate this population, so the need has arisen to
apply the concept of sustainable housing, and seeking to establish a set of
criteria, which can be included in a multi-criteria system for assessing the
sustainability of residential buildings in Egypt, as appropriate with the
environmental, cultural, social and economic context.
