Abstract Community acquired pneumonia (CAP), which is a very common reason for hospital admission, represents a potentially life-threatening condition. CAP is the first infectious cause of death in developed countries, with an estimate of 10% - 25% of CAP patients do not cure in a timely manner. The main reasons behind this delay are: 1) development of complications e.g., post-obstructive pneumonia, empyema, or lung abscess; 2) false perception of treatment failure. This perception may be attributed to the slow recovery in patients have superimposed problems, e.g., malignancy, inflammations, heart failure, or hospital-acquired infection. Patients diagnosed with severe CAP normally require admission to intensive care unit (ICU). More than 50% of the patients admitted to the ICU develop respiratory failure and require mechanical ventilation (MV) with a high mortality rate. Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is an acute disease that causes high mortality in the elderly; in-hospital mortality as high as 10% is reported in patients |
