Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) has been ranked to be one of the top ten causes of global mortality worldwide. The concept of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) might be a multi-dimensional nature; it includes psychological, physical and social aspects.Non-adherence to treatment of TB has a negative effect on clinical effectiveness, morbidity, causes, medical and psychosocial complications; increases health care costs and reduces HRQOL.Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the health related quality of life and medication adherence for Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Subjects and Method: Descriptive design was utilized. Convenience sample of pulmonary tuberculosis patients (56) at Almasaha Albahary at Port Said City and Chest Hospital at Damietta City were included. Tools: Tool I: Structured interviewing questionnaire, Tool II: Health Related Quality of life for patients with TB, Tool III: Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Results: This study showed that 67. 9% of studied patients with pulmonary TB were high psychological domain of health related quality of life, 60.7 % of patients were scored high health related quality of life and 75% of them were highly adhered to medications. Conclusion: It can concluded that three fifth of the studied patients had high HRQOL and three quarters of the patients had high adherence to medication. This study showed that there was statistically positive correlation between HRQOL and medication adherence among studied patients. Recommendation: Conduct continuous educational program for patients with pulmonary TB to improve HRQOL and medication adherence.
