Abstract

This thesis is one of the researches that concern about how to make cities resilient to the ongoing events and risks surrounding cities whether natural, such as earthquakes, floods or man-made ones (poverty, unemployment and lack of resources, etc.) that have led to the need of studying resilience of cities in order to adapt and resist such risks and pressures. This research presents the theoretical study of urban resilience and its characteristics and the concept of the resilient city in addition to studying the framework of the city’s resilience, its goals and indicators. The main title of this research is about learned lessons from country resilience challenge.The research focuses on latest strategies taken by the ARUP and Rockefeller foundation to make those cities more resilient to shocks and stresses. Those strategies are translated as actions in which the city take on the short and long term by its citizens and the government.As a result, the study includes which actions help and guide citizens, researches, stakeholders and the government understand guidelines in order to make a city more resilient and less vulnerable to stresses and shocks whether now or in the future. It is important to put in mind which of actions are suitable for Egypt’s situation and the nature of its citizens.The research exposes to an analytical study which is also undertaken in form of a comparative analysis of four examples of cities that face risks & challenges. The analytical study targets poor communities because they are vulnerable to stresses and shocks more than other cities.Consequently, the practical study of an Applied study of ”Burg El-Burullus” city as a case study, its site analysis, strengths, weakness and opportunities. Finally, a summary to reach guidelines that is formulated to solve the problems and ways of dealing with them. Through which recommendations target the most important urban elements of the city’s poor and vulnerable areas, which can be taken to develop and advance them.Gathering the result information analytical and the case study analysis could answer the previous questions about applying City Resilience in Egypt.
