Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the chemical composition of Swietenia mahagoni seeds , studying the fatty acids composition and phenolic compounds in acetone extract of seeds , and evaluation of mahagoni extracts and oil on the glucose level , plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol of rats. Also the effects of mahagoni extracts and oil on liver and kidney functions were studied. The study of antimicrobial effect of mahagoni extracts and oil were also considered.
The results obtained through this work can be summarized in the following points:
1 - Chemical composition of Swietenia mahagoni seeds : Seeds without shells contain moisture (3 %) , crude fiber (5.4 %), ash (2.5 %) , crude protein (13.5 %), crude fat (9.5 %) and total carbohydrate (69.1 %). Whole seeds consisted of moisture (3.6 %), crude fiber (14 %), ash (3%), crude protein (13 %), crude fat (7.4 %) and total carbohydrate (62.6 %).
2 – Total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids: Total phenolic compounds in seed extracts of Swietenia mahagoni have been ranged from 28.08 to 118.48 mg ∕g meanwhile total flavonoids has been ranged from 10.33 to 22.44 mg ∕g .
3- Swietenia mahagoni seeds acetone extract composition : Analysis of Swietenia mahagoni acetone extract of seeds showed that menthol and nerolidol are the major phenolic ( 12.32 and 10.06 % respectively ).
4 - Fatty acids composition : The most abundant saturated fatty acids were lignoceric acid (C24) 38.23% followed by stearic acid (C18) 35.69%, meanwhile the unsaturated fatty acid was linoleic acid (C18:2), which accounted for ( 26.08 %).

5 – In vitro antioxidant activity of Swietenia mahagoni seeds: Extracts of Swietenia mahagoni were further highlighted by the quenching of DPPH free radicals. The values of absorbance for seeds extracts ranged from 11.22 % to 69.21% compared with the values of absorbance for ascorbic acid and followed the order of effectiveness as: ascorbic acid > acetone extract > methanol extracts > oil > water extract . For reducing power assay, the highest concentration (100 μg/ml) of Swietenia mahagoni methanol extract showed highest activity ( 2.565 ) while acetone extract , oil and water extracts (2.488 , 1.957 and 1.284 ) respectively , at the same concentration
6- In vivo study of Swietenia mahagoni seeds on diabetic rats:
a- treatment with Swietenia mahagoni seed extracts and oil decreased significantly glucose level and Swietenia mahagoni metahnol and acetone extracts gave more effect than water extract and oil.
b- treatment with Swietenia mahagoni seed extracts and oil decreased significantly GOT , GPT , ALP , urea , creatinine and malondialdehyde level as compared with hyperglycemic group .
7- Antimicrobial activity of Swietenia mahagoni seed extracts and oil:
Swietenia mahagoni seed extracts and oil showed antimicrobial properties on microorgansims such as E.coli, satphylococcus oureus and candida Sp.
