Abstract

HCC is the most frequent primary liver malignancy and one of the most common malignancies worldwide. HCC is considered as the sixth most common cancer type and as the third cause of cancer-related death in the developed countries. Thioredoxin (Trx1) is an oxidoreductase enzyme that has been seen in a variety of malignancies and recent evidence suggests that it may be associated with aggressive tumor growth and poor survival. This study was conducted to establish the sensitivity and specificity of serum thioredoxin versus Alpha fetoprotein in diagnosing HCC in HCV treated cirrhotic Egyptian patients. All the included cases were subjected to full history taking, clinical examinationand laboratory investigation. The median level of thioredoxin (Trx) in the HCC group was 338.06 IU/l which was higher than its median value in the cirrhotic non HCC groups (157.92 IU/l) with high level of significance between the study groups (P < 0.001). The best detected cutoff points are 24.0, 198.19 & 0.5427. The highest sensitivity &specificity are detected for AFP & combined markers. The total accuracy was highest for combined markers then AFP and least was for TRX.
