Abstract

Due to the increase of the losses in the distribution systems to a ratio of up to 13%
of the power generation and also a change in the voltage on the sides of loads either
increase or decrease, the control devices are used to alleviate these events. Therefore, this
thesis aims to reduce the power losses and improving the voltage profile of distribution
system by using many devices such as voltage regulator, distribution network flexible AC
transmission systems (DFACTS) devices that include two devices which are :
Distribution STATIC Compensator (D-STATCOM) and Series Static Voltage Restorer
(SSVR) as well as auto-transformer. This thesis presents also a proposed procedure to
find optimal locations, tapping and sizes of these devices in distribution systems to
minimize the total power losses and improve the voltage profile. JAYA algorithm is
proposed JAYA to find the optimal location, tapping and sizes of these devices. The
backward/forward sweep (BFS) algorithm is developed for load flow calculations. The
proposed algorithm is applied to different standard test systems, which are IEEE 33-bus,
and IEEE 69-bus radial distribution systems. The obtained results are compared with
other methods in the literature. The comparative studies show the capability of voltage
regulator, D-STATCOM, SSVR and auto-transformer for power loss reduction and
voltage profile improvement in distribution system.
