Abstract

Dyes and heavy metals contamination globally takes a considerable concern recently. This is resulted from its bioaccumulation nature that causes severe threats to health of environment. Indeed, detoxification of polluted environment from these contaminants cannot be ignored. So, the overarching target of the present work was the preparation of ecofriendly biosorbents. Monolithic algal powder biosorbent (MAGP), sepia shell based composite (SSBC) and urea calcium alginate xero gel beads (U-CAB) were fabricated based on two marine algae and different copious waste biomass. Marine algae were Enteromorpha flexuosa and Padina boergesenii, whilst the marine wastes were shells of Sepia pharaonis and Anadara uropigimelana. The synthesized biosorbents were then scrutinized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier-transform infra-red spectrometry (FTIR), point of zero charge (PHPZC) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area. Influence of several parameters on the sorption properties of these innovated biosorbents towards different dyes and copper metal ion were investigated.
