Abstract

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects feeling, the way of thinking and acting. The rapid increase in the elderly population has engendered public concern about issues associated, such as successful aging and social factors. Elderly people who have symptoms of depression are at very high risk for functional disability and have a great need for accurate diagnostic assessment. If depression confirmed, the results are relevant for prevention because people who have symptoms of depression may be a suitable target group for intervention before the development of severe disability. So, early detecting of this health problems is important because it may respond to treatment, thereby reducing some of the clinical complications in management of elderly. So, the objective of the current study was to screening for depression among Geriatric age group in rural setting, Egypt. For this purpose a cross-sectional study included a cluster random sample of 200 person aged ≥60 years old was conducted for early detection of depression. All participants were subjected to: 1. A pre designed questionnaire sheet including sociodemographic data 2. Assessment of depression using validated Arab version of Geriatric Depression Scale short version (GDS-15). A score < 5 points wasn’t considered depressed. A score ≥ 5 points was almost always indicative of depression.
