Abstract
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are problems that experienced by many patients, in this research, the case of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea has been studied, how to be diagnosed and treated non-surgically and surgically. Excessive daytime sleepiness and loud snoring are the major symptoms of OSA, often leading to serious medical complications if unrecognized and untreated. Many techniques are used in management of snoring and OSA like nasal operation to correct the deviated septum, median glossotomy to manage the hypertrophied tongue, palatal surgeries like lateral pharyngeal wall expansion and UPPP, and laryngeal procedures for treating anomalies of larynx. But CPAP remains the gold standard for management of OSA patients. Anterior palate redundancy is considered the most important cause of snoring and apnea during sleep, so we studied its surgical treatment. Anterior palatoplasty is one of surgical methods in treatment snoring and hypoapnea. In a selected homogeneous group of simple snoring patients, anterior palatoplasty (AP) is a safe, easy, single application procedure that may be done under general anesthesia or even in office by local anesthesia. Results of this prospective study demonstrated a favorable snoring scale, polysomnographic and ESS results in snoring patients undergoing anterior palatoplasty. Fewer complications and less pain in our study when compared to other study groups. However, studies with large sample groups are required to understand the detailed effectiveness of the procedure. The study was done on patients who suffer from snoring and hypoapnea that caused by redundancy of soft palate, results showed improvement of snoring and hypoapnea. We recommend anterior palatoplasty as a good surgical method technique alone or accompanied by other surgery for treatment of simple snoring and follow up for long time.
