Abstract

M
others suffer significantly high stress levels when their babies need NICU admission. NICU physical environment and alteration in parental role are the main sources of stress. When analyzing the relationship of maternal stress level with different infant and mother characteristics, the stress level affected with these variables or not.
Aim of the work to determine the stress levels among mothers of babies admitted in NICU and to identify demographic parameters that influence their stress levels using PSS: NICU questionnaire.
For that purpose, we included 152 mothers of neonates in nonprobability convenience sample admitted in NICU in kafr-elzayat general hospital from December 2018 to November 2019.
The results showed that there was moderate maternal stress level score, with highest mean level maternal stress score is parental role alteration subclass, followed by baby’s behavior and appearance subclass and the lowest stress level in subclass sights and sounds.
The results also showed that there were significant differences in maternal stress by demographic variables as (feeding, gestational age, birth weight, NICU length of stay, duration of oxygen therapy and congenital anomaly of babies), demographic variables like gravida, mother’s age, residence, education and occupation did not significantly affect the stress levels of NICU mothers.
This is first study which compared maternal stress level in NICU with Cumulative frequency of specific acute and chronic stressful procedures/ events during the baby’s stay in NICU. the results showed that high level of acute stressful procedures or events especially in acute moderately and little stressful, Correlations among cumulative frequency of acute or chronic stressful procedures and overall maternal stress score found that, weak to moderately correlation between Mean parental role alteration, Mean sights and sounds and Mean baby’s behavior and appearance with Cumulative frequency of (acute, chronic, acute +chronic) stressful procedures.
