Abstract Iron deficiency is the most widespread and common nutritional disorder in the world. It is estimated that 30% of the global population has iron-deficiency anemia, and most of them live in developing countries. Both iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia are associated with impaired neurocognitive function in infancy. There is also an association of iron-deficiency anemia and later, possibly irreversible, cognitive defects. The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy of oral iron amino acid chelate, lactoferrin, lactoferrin with iron and traditional iron in treatment of iron deficiency anemia. This study was designed to treat IDA in 120 children aged (1-18) years attended to outpatient clinic at Menoufia University Hospitals within a period from April 2019 to November 2019. Patients were subjected to history taking, clinical evaluation, and laboratory investigations including CBC and Iron profile data were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed. The age of children in our study ranged between 1-14 years old with mean age 5.26 in group A, 4.54 in group B, 4.83 in group C and 5.59 in group D and the mean weight of children was 19.0 in group A, 17.73 in group B, 18.20 in group C and 18.80 in group D. Regarding complaint before treatment, there was no significant difference between groups. Complaints included poor appetite, pallor, pica, sleepiness and low school performance, but regarding complain after treatment there was significant difference between groups. All children in groups A, C and D showed improvement in complaint after treatment, while only 19 children in group B showed improvement after treatment. Results of the present study shows significant difference between the studied groups regarding CBC parameters and Iron profile parameters after treatment. FeBC resulted in significant increase in Hb, MCV, MCH, SI, SF and TSAT and decrease in RDW than did LF, No significant difference detected between FeBC and LF with Iron regarding CBC parameters and Iron profile parameters, FeBC resulted in significant increase in Hb, MCH, SI, SF and decrease in RDW than did IPC, LF with iron resulted in significant increase in Hb, MCV, MCH, SI, SF and TSAT and decrease in RDW than did LF, IPC resulted in significant increase in Hb, MCV, MCH, SI, SF and TSAT and decrease in RDW than did LF and LF with iron resulted in significant increase in SF than did IPC. Regarding side effects of drugs FeBC showed fewer side effects than did LF with iron and IPC and LF resulted in the least side effects. |
