Abstract

Foot ulceration in patients with diabetes is a serious complication associated with increased morbidity, mortality and healthcare cost and is the main cause of amputation, in Yemen 2014 Prevalence of diabetes in adults 20-79 years 6%. Total cases of adults with diabetes 716.600. Aim: The aim of the present study is to assess the quality of life among diabetic foot patients in Yemen. Design: A descriptive design was utilized to conduct the study. Setting: The study was conducted in the surgical and outpatient departments in Dhamar General Hospital Authority-Dhamar-Yemen. Subjects: The participant of this study were composed of (59) of diabetic foot patients. Tools: One tool consisted of four parts were socidemographic data of the studied patients, diabetic foot ulcer patient’s attitude toward foot care, quality of life domains of DFU patients using SF-36 survey sheet, and factors affecting QoL among diabetic foot ulcer patients used Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) for collecting data. Results: The findings of the study of the (59) patients with diabetic foot ulcer indicated that (57.6%) were male and 42.4% female, (60.1%) had negative attitude toward foot care. Regarding quality of life, (77.9%) of studied patients had poor QoL and (22.1%) had good QoL. There was positive statistical significant difference in the factors affecting quality of life regarding trimming toenails and keeping feet clean and there was highly significant correlation between total quality of life and pain-magnitude of studied patients. Conclusion: Diabetic foot ulcer affects all domains of diabetic patient’s life and can reduce patients QoL. Recommendations: There are obvious needs for educational programs for improved diabetic patients QoL.
