Abstract issues of sexuality in general and masturbation in particular, are very sensitive topics to deal with especially in traditional conservative communities. Sexuality related issues are not talked in the family in Egypt and sexual education is not provided at schools. Therefore, young people try to obtain information on sexuality related issues as masturbation from other sources as internet and friends. These information they obtain from unsafe sources cause young people to believe sexual myths and have insufficient sexual knowledge. The present work aimed at evaluating the frequency of masturbation among Menoufia University students of both sexes (male and female) and factors affecting it. Our study was carried out on 500 students of both sexes (275 male and 225 female) from faculty of medicine and faculty of nursing in Menoufia University. We used a self-report questionnaire which was translated into Arabic. Privacy was guaranteed for all the participants. The questionnaire included: Personal data (age, sex, parents‘ educational level, residence, religious state), Data of students’ knowledge about masturbation and its hazards in general and on the reproductive system. Data related to students’ practices of masturbation. Factors which affect the frequency of masturbation. Religious view of masturbation and guilt feeling. The results of this study showed that: The majority of participants reported that masturbation is a physical or Psychological or social problem. Most of participants reported the need of masturbation awareness. Also, about half of our participants did not receive any educational information about masturbation in pre- university education or in university education. The main source of information about masturbation for the participants was the internet, followed by friends Male participants tended to watch pornographic materials more than female participants. There is a wide spread of myths related to practicing masturbation among participants. The most common myth to be reported was that masturbation causes females do not reach orgasm after marriage. Male participants were more likely to practice masturbation than female participants. Regarding factors significantly associated with practicing masturbation, they were age, religious state, religious belief about masturbation, perception of masturbation, watching pornography and having sexual fantasies. |
