Abstract

By the increment of the population nowadays, the needed amount of treated water for several domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses increased. The direction for solving this is operating the existing WTP to the maximum to obtain the highest available capacity of the plant. Or upgrading the existing water treatment plants vertically without constructing new treatment units only by changing the mechanical units of the existing one. This could save the cost of land area, building new units, new equipments, and labors.
This study aims to increase the capacity of the existing wtp vertically without building new units using modern procedures of sedimentation and filtration.
This study included comparison between four types of sedimentation units (clariflocculator, plate settler, Accelerator, Accelerator modified with plate settler) followed by four types of filtration (mono sand, GAC, Dual, Triple media filter). The removal efficiency after all of them were within the permissible limits for drinking water which allows the application of them on the existing wtp. This application resulted in six proposals that are compared from technical and financial point of view to choose the best application solution.
For the application on Al-Ameria wtp, the study shows that the vertical upgrading proposal which has the Plate settler as sedimentation unit followed by rapid sand filters has the highest points in the technical comparison 79 points and low construction and running cost 59,962,000 L.E and could increase the plant capacity from 520,000 m3/ day to 1,085,184 m³/day which mean 108 % increase. while the cost of horizontally upgrading the mentioned wtp with the same flow is 479,266,000 L.E this means that vertical upgrading saved 87% of total cost of horizontal upgrading. Also, vertical upgrade give the possibility to produce about 8-9 times the quantity could achieved by horizontal upgrading taking into consideration saving time, minimize land, and material used.
