Abstract

Architecture is a technology-intensive discipline. Digital technology continues its integration in both the profession and in architectural education as the demand for realistic visualization increases. In this changing context, new students and seasoned professionals in architecture find that the identity of an architect has evolved over time to include skills in technology. Firms seek talented graduates, students seek the right balance of learning, and educators attempt to bridge the expectations between education and practice. With the rapid development of computer applications in the architectural field, the need to find a framework to integrate the computer applications with architectural curriculum has increased. Hence, it became a mandatory to examine the computer integration impact on architectural schools to help find the efficient framework for architectural education. The main questions are; why to teach computer applications, what values that it can add to education? When to start teaching it, in which stage should be taught and to what extent should it be integrated? What to teach, which applications can be helpful in each stage? And how it can be integrated into the curriculum? The thesis aims to bridge the gap between national architectural education and the international status. It studies the possibility of integrating computer applications into architectural education based on a theoretical and analytical investigation. The contemporary computer applications’ teaching is examined, nationally and internationally, through the schools’ curriculum. That helps understanding the current educational status. While a survey was conducted on a sample of architects in order to investigate the profession needs in various architectural fields.
