Abstract Background:Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare, life-threatening disease that has long-lasting effects even among patients who survive and are cured. It is a disease that affects multi¬ple systems and results from infection, usually bacterial, of the endocardial surface of the heart.The diagnosis of IE may be difficult to establish and a strategy that combines clinical, microbiological and echocardiography results has been codified in the modified Duke criteria.Aim of the work: This registry is conducted to describe, by means of a general hospital-based prospective study, the clinical characteristics, complications, treatment and long-term outcomes of IE.Patient and Methods:This observational descriptive prospective registry was conducted at Cardiology Department in Specialized Medical Hospital, faculty of medicine, Mansoura University during the period from August 2016 to August 2018 after approval of the local ethical committee of Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University. With additional after One year follow up for each survived patient after his discharge.Conclusion: IE is an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart. The approach to prophylaxis and therapy has changed over the last decade. The concept of antibiotics to prevent Infective endocarditis has changed considerably dose and administration regimens have become simpler and shorterReaching a rapid and accurate diagnosis in cases of suspected IE is a central challenge of the disease. |
