Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate using a program in global reading skills on developing second year prep stage students’ reading comprehension and reading speed using the following skills: previewing, predicting and skimming. Moreover, it examined the kind of the relationship between reading comprehension and reading speed: whether they are correlated or independent. The independent variable of the study was global Reading Skills. The dependent variables were reading comprehension and reading speed. The control variables were (age, gender, years of studying English). The experiment followed the quasi-experimental control group design. It was conducted on second year prep school students at Al Karm prep school, Aboqorkas, Minia. It had a pre –post means of getting data. The participants were randomly assigned into a treatment group and non-treatment group. A treatment group and non-treatment group were exposed to pre-post test procedures. The non-treatment group was instructed and trained according to the regular method. The treatment group received the experimental program of the researcher in global reading skills. Instruments of the study included a reading comprehension and reading speed tests and a program in global reading skills. Quantitative data analysis using t-test carried out in the current study. The t-test used to compare the means of students’ scores between the treatment group and the non-treatment group. After carrying out the program of the present study, scores in the pre and post-test were compared and analyzed using the ” t-test”. The analysis of the obtained data using the t-test showed that the treatment group achieved significantly better than the non-treatment group in the post-performance on the reading comprehension and reading speed tests. Moreover, results confirmed that there was a positive correlation between reading comprehension and reading speed. Different recommendations and suggestions for further research were presented.
