Abstract

Concrete is considered the basic material in the construction field. Cement manufacturing emits huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. Also, the concrete deterioration in aggressive environments is one of its disadvantages. Thus, finding new ecofriendly construction materials for green and sustainable construction is very essential. The geopolymer based materials can be employed as ecofriendly sustainable construction materials. The properties of concrete using fly ash (FA) based GP as the binder was shown in recent studies. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) exhibits good mechanical properties, durability and thermal resistance. As in Portland cement concrete (PCC), GPC has a relative low tensile strength therefor fibers may be added to overcome this deficiency. Furthermore, few studies which were conducted to investigate the influence of adding fibers on the strength characteristics of GPC as well as the behavior of fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGPC) slabs under impact load. Hence, an effort had been made through the present study to investigate the influence of adding fibers such as steel fibers (SF) and polypropylene fibers (PPF) on the strength and other engineering properties of GPC composites. Moreover, the behavior of fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGPC) slabs under static and impact loads were investigated. In order to achieve the above objectives, the present study had been divided into three major phases: the first phase (phase І) which through it a preliminary study had been done to investigate the effect of varying of (molarities of sodium hydroxide solution (NH), ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide solutions (NS to NH) and ratio of alkaline solution to fly ash (AS: FA) in addition to varying (rest period and heat curing time). In the first phase of the experimental program, 25 trial mixes of geopolymer mortar were cast and tested. For the second phase (phase ІІ), nine GPC mixes were investigated including two mixes without fibers as well as seven FRGPC mixes. The volume fractions of SF were (0.5%, 1% and 1.5%), whereas the investigated volume fractions of PPF were (0.5 and 1%). The fresh and hardened GPC properties mainly: workability, density, compressive, splitting tensile, bond and flexural strength were measured. For the third phase (phase ІІІ), 18 slab specimens of size 700x700x50 mm were constructed. Five of the slabs were cast to study the behavior under static load, while the remaining 13 slabs were cast to study the behavior under impact load. The different types of fibers, volume fractions of fibers, varying of molarities of sodium hydroxide solution (NH) and types of concrete (normal concrete and geopolymer concrete) were investigated in this phase.
