Abstract
Background: Laser acupuncture has been suggested to have a promising effect on allergic rhinitis (AR) in children, and widely used as a complementary treatment. Aim: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of laser acupuncture in pediatric allergic rhinitis, versus the medications effect in addition to assess its anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory effects through measurement of serum inflammatory and pro inflammatory markers (H s -CRP,IL-17). Methods: 60 patients with allergic rhinitis were randomly allocated into two groups group 1, thirty children received laser acupuncture session (2 sessions weekly over 6 weeks), low level laser 904 nm with power of 100 mw was used on a spot area of 1 cm2 for 1 minute at each acupuncture point for AR and the otherthirty children included in group 2 received medication for AR in the form of(intranasal steroids, antihistaminic, leukotriene antagonist) and Patient’s agesranged from 4 to 18 years. Evaluation in both groups was conducted through estimation of the serum levels of ESR, eosinophil count, Ig E, IL-17 and hs- CRP before and after the study period in addition to clinical and rhinoscopic assessment of patients. Results were statistically analyzed. Results: There was asignificant improvement in the symptoms severity score in both groups, significant improvement in the inflammatory markers hs -CRP levels in both groups especially in the group which received laser acupuncture sessions. Decreased in the level of IL17 didn’t reach the significant level either between the 2groups orin the same group receivedlaseracupuncture sessions at the end of the study.Conclusion: Low level laser therapy(LLLT) is a reliable, painless and noninvasivesuccessful modality, which could be used as a complementary oralternative method for treatment ofallergic rhinitis in children.
