Abstract

Good practice of occupational health and safety can be achieved
by considering the security of each employees, employers and other
shareholders. Occupational health and safety measures put in workplace
at the Damietta Port are not enough in some places and there are some of
workers are dissatisfied with the safety and occupational health controls
and measures that currently applied at their workplaces. In some
departments, some labors suffered from insufficient ventilation such as in
workshop and vehicles workshop, also they complain that they aren’t
providing with comfortable protective equipment and for this reason
most of the labors don’t committed to wearing PPEs.
At some administration buildings, escape exits that are specified
to be used in emergency cases for evacuation are not complied with civil
defense law where the emergency doors are difficult to be opened and the
escape stairs are rusty and not suitable for evacuation also there are no
emergency light on the escape routes. At the maintenance workshop, one
major inadequacy in occupational health practices that there are welding
activities in a closed room without any ventilation. This represents high
risk for the welder due to the likelihood of fire and suffocation
occurrence. At painting workshop, it is noticed that the waste segregation
is not applied. There is hazardous waste as thinner, paints cans and
containers with solid and plastic wastes that may cause fire. Another
finding, fire extinguishers are found all over areas and administration
buildings but not distributed well according to the size of place and the
type of activities.
