Abstract Uric acid (UA) is a final enzymatic product of purine metabolism. It is the product of oxidation of xanthine and hypoxanthine by xanthine oxidoreductase. Uric acid takes important part in metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia. Many studies indicate serum uric acid (SUA) as a key ingredient in the setting of metabolic syndrome. In clinical and epidemiological studies (SUA) has been related to the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the work is to find out the relation between serum uric acid with atherosclerosis and cardiometabolic risk factors. The study included ninety-two male patients with variable readings of serum uric acid who were randomly chosen from Alexandria main university hospital outpatient clinics. All the subjects were subjected to full history taking and clinical examination including general examination and local examination. Laboratory investigations including measurement complete blood count (CBC), blood urea, serum creatinine and liver enzymes (ALT and AST). Assessment of serum uric acid was done in all the cases. Radiological assessment of carotid intima- media thickness test and resting ECG were performed in all the included cases. Ankle-brachial index (ABI) measured by an oscillometric method using an automatic ABI device. |
