Abstract

Many preparatory school students face serious difficulties in expressing themselves in English. To overcome these difficulties, the researcher inducted a pilot study to evaluate students speaking skills. It was concluded that students had low level of speaking and motivation. As a result, the researcher attempted using interactive tasks strategies that might help improve students’ speaking skill. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a program of interactive tasks designed according to IDLS model in developing English speaking skills and motivation to speak among preparatory school students. The sample of this study was selected from first year students in preparatory school for boys and girls. It included (60) students in the school year 2018-2019.Students were assigned either to the experimental group (N=30) or to the control group (N=30). The two groups had the same teacher and time. The researcher taught the two groups for 24 sessions, 45minutes for each. The members of experimental group were taught using the three activities of interactive tasks (debate, storytelling and role play), members of the control group were taught in the regular way. The researcher prepared two speaking tests to evaluate students’speaking performance. First test form was administered as a pretest and the second test as a posttest to the experimental and control groups Each test consisted of 10 interview questions and describing a picture, where students were asked to speak about a certain topic which was proposed by the researcher .Two raters scored the test using a scoring rubric developed by the researcher. The researcher used the SPSS statistical package to analyze the data and identify the differences between the two groups .The t –test was used to compare the scores between the experimental group and control group.
