Abstract

Introduction: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a potentially life-threatening abdominal emergency that remains a common cause of hospitalization. The major indicator for the assessment of quality of nursing care is patients’ satisfaction which they perceive and that have to be fulfilled during hospitalization. The aim of the present study was to evaluate effect of implementing training program regarding care of patients with upper GIT bleeding on nurses’ performance and patients’ satisfaction. Research design A Quazi experimental design was used. The sample convenience sample of 25 male and female nurses who are dealing with upper gastrointestinal bleeding patients and 80 male and female patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding are selected from hematemesis unit of Emergency Hospital, Mansoura University. Tools three tools were used to collect data; Patients structured interviewing questionnaire to assess patient’s satisfactions, Nurses knowledge assessment self-administrated questionnaire and Observational checklist of nurses’ practice regarding care of patient with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Results of the present study revealed that there was a highly statistically significant improvement in total knowledge and practice of nurses regarding care of patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding with p-value of (<0.001). Additionally patient’s satisfaction of nursing care provided was improved significantly after implementation of the training program with p-value of (<0.001). The study concluded that the training program has a remarkable significant improvement on nurse’s knowledge, practices and patient satisfaction. The study recommended a continuing training program be planned for and offered on regular basis to nurses in Hematemesis Unit to improve their knowledge and practice regarding care of upper gastrointestinal bleeding patients and periodic monitoring of nurses knowledge and practice by nursing audits and supervisors.
