Abstract

Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease of the joint representing failed repair of joint damage. Intraarticular stresses that lead to joint damage may be initiated by abnormalities in articular cartilage, subchondral bone,ligaments, menisci, periarticular muscles, peripheral nerves, or synovium.Knee OA is a common condition which represents a major contribution to the burden of physical disability and can be accompanied by intense pain that’s severe enough to produce significant emotional distress.Many nutritional supplements have been used for treatment of OA.Vitamin D status has an effect on the risk of the development or progression of OA because vitamin D influences bone quality.The aim of this work was to study the effect of vitamin D therapy in clinical, laboratory, and radiographic findings in primary knee osteoarthritic patients. This study included 40 cases with primary knee OA diagnosed according to clinical and radiographic findings parameters of ACR for Primary knee osteoarthritis. All the cases studied, suffered from vitamin D insufficiency (equal or less than 50 n. mol/L or 30 ng /ml. Patients with secondary OA or other causes of vitamin D deficiency not related to arthritis were excluded.
