Abstract

Silicon metal is one of the most important metals produced from silica by carbothermic reduction in an electric arc furnace which works at high temperatures between 1000 to 3000 oC. Silicon represent main element in solar cell, electronic chips and biomedical tools. The objective of this work is to simulate the direct carbothermal reduction of SiO2 for Si metal using a thermodynamic calculation of Gibb’s free energy minimization. This study is a prerequisite study for a dynamic one. In this study different mole ratio have been used between SiO2/C/SiC, the best mole ratio of SiO2/C/SiC 1:10:1 when silicon appears at 2200 K and equals 1.1 kmole in MATLAB® but using Aspen HYSYS® reveals that silicon appears at 2200 K and equals 1.9 kmole.
The temperature range between 2000-3000 oC is recommended to be studied further where silicon appears. Many basic chemical and kinetic reactions are recommended to be studied in order to facilitate construction of validated model of the electric arc furnace to be used in the work of intelligent control.
