Abstract

Basing on the aforementioned, the theoretical and practical frameworks of the thesis are as follows:
The introduction presents the research question, the aims, objectives, the structure of the thesis, and the methodology adopted. Moreover, it includes the previous studies which concern the site of Kom al-Ahmar.
The first chapter begins with presenting the archaeological, and the ancient sources of the existence of pottery manufacture in Egypt in antiquity, specifically in ancient Egyptian Dynasties and in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. It presents the evidence on the strong role that pottery manufacture played in the trade of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt. Additionally, the chapter sorts out the different pottery fabrics in Egypt.
The second chapter focuses on Kom al-Ahmar in Beheira Governorate in the light of the available sources. The chapter discusses the history of the area and its geographical location in the Delta. Furthermore, it deals with the topographical features of the excavated areas of the mission. Thence, the chapter presents the typology and provenance groups of the studied pottery group.
The third chapter contains the detailed descriptions on the forms, chemical composition of the fabrics, surface treatment method of the studied pottery group and its Egyptian comparisons as well, in the light of the available data. Moreover, the chapter comprises the catalog of the studied group sherds according to the scientific criteria: digital drawings, measurements of rims or bases diameters, components, color, texture…etc.
