Abstract Summary & conclusion Personality is an enduring pattern of perceiving, relating, and thinking about the environment and oneself that is seen in a wide range of social and personal situations. As such, it is relatively stable and predictable, characterizing an individual in ordinary situations. When non-pathological, it is flexible and adaptable, with less mature coping strategies being held in check. When disordered, it is maladaptive and implacable, with immature and primitive coping strategies rising to the surface and being used in either an inflexible or unpredictable manner as to cause significant distress for the individual and for others.(Blais 2016). Borderline personality disorder (BPD), also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD), is a long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by unstable relationships with other people, unstable sense of self, and unstable emotions. There is frequent dangerous behavior and self-harm. People may also struggle with a feeling of emptiness and a fear of abandonment. Symptoms may be brought on by seemingly normal events. The behavior typically begins by early adulthood, and occurs across a variety of situation. ( Livesley 2001). BPD is the most prevalent personality disorder in all clinical settings (12% to 15%). It is believed to occur in 2% to 3% of the general population, with a 2:1 female-to-male ratio. (Torgerson et al. 2005). |
