Abstract

This study aims at explaining what is meant by culture-bound terms, it provides the strategies used in translation as well as explaining the solutions to these difficult cultural items in the translation of The Automobile Club of Egypt. Even of the seemingly unsolvable, the study shows that it will be somehow possible to find a translation. The study also reflects the divergence and convergence as employed by both the writer and the translator. It shows how the loan words which originate from different languages can be translated into the English language. This study aims at answering the very question of the possibility or impossibility of the translation of culture, by presenting the most prevalent theories related to the culture-bound terms and their equivalents. This study mainly focuses on translation problems encountered in the transfer of cultural references, and the translation solutions to these cultural problems, which reveals the intercultural gap between source culture (SL) and target culture (TL). The model of the analysis of the study follows Peter Newmark’s categorization model (1988), which systematizes the CSIs into (material, social, political and religious cultures). Also, Franco Aixela’s model (1996), identifies the translation strategies, which gives more insight to the researcher’s Method of Analysis. The study, also, explains the extent to which culture-specific items (CSIs) are subjected to the dichotomy of Lawrence Venuti’s “domestication and foreignization” strategies (1995). It shows the most common categories and used strategies in Russel Harris’s translation.
