Abstract

The objectives of our study was to study the involvement of sacroiliac joints, lower limbs joints and entheses and to measure degree of osteoporosis, both clinically and radiologically in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases and their relation to disease activity and fecal calprotectin level.
This cross-sectional study included fifty patients diagnosed as inflammatory bowel diseases. All patients were subjected to the following:
 Demographic data recording.
 IBD assessment by history taking and disease activity evaluation.
 Rheumatologic assessment by :
-History taking and physical examination
-Laboratory investigations ( ESR, CRP, CBC, ASCA, pANCA, fecal CPN, vit D, serum total and ionized calcium, serum potassium and magnesium levels).
-Radiological evaluation by ultrasonography of lower limb entheses, plain x-ray (hip and SI joints) and DEXA scan for osteoporosis measurement.
The results showed the following:
*SI, hip, Knee and ankle joints tenderness were more common affecting about 60 % of patients but swelling was detected only in 30%.Lower limb entheases tenderness and swelling were detected in 86% and 50% of IBD patients.
*Sacroiliitis and hip arthritis were present in 78% and 62% of IBD patients detected by x ray.
