Abstract

The topic is divided into a historical introduction and four main chapters as follows:
 Introduction:
First of all, the definitions, the ancient use of incense, the general basic elements of the incense burner, the historical background of the incense burners and the incense materials. The ancient sources that have been written could be considered as a historical data of the incense burners.
- Chapter one: Anthropomorphic motifs of the Hellenistic incense burners:
Chapter one represents the incense burners which are formed of or decorated with human shapes. These shapes could be represented as deities such as goddess, gods and mythological characters or others as normal individuals.
1. Divine representation.
2. Human representation.
Chapter two: Zoomorphic motifs of the Hellenistic incense burners:
This chapter is representing the zoomorphic motifs of incense burners in many decorations as dove, falcon, lion, mouse or rooster. In addition, the decorative mythological creatures are decorated some examples as uraeus. Nevertheless, some incense burners have been decorated with multi motifs on the same example.
1. Bird’ motifs.

3. Mythological creature’ motifs.
4. Multi zoomorphic’ motifs.
Chapter three: Phytomorphic, geometric and architectural motifs of the Hellenistic incense burners:
The main point of this chapter is the representation of incense burners that are decorated with phytomorphic motifs as ivy, laurel leaves, rosettes and Geometrical motifs as: meander, triangles, and semicircles. These motifs could be appeared either painted or inscribed on the incense burners. Also, there is another category of the incense burners that are adorned with architectural motifs as: column’s flutes and naos.
1. Phytomorphic motifs.
2. Geometric motifs.
3. Multi geometric and phytomorphic motifs.
4. Architectural motifs.
 Chapter four: Analytical and statistical studies:
This chapter is a conclusion of the incense burner’s functions according to the shown examples through the whole thesis. It also gives a classification for the Hellenistic incense burners according to the shape. There are some given charts for analyzing the incense burner’s techniques, materials, types, motifs, provenances and relations between them.
